Steamboat Ski Area, Colorado - Page 5

December 16, 2006 - January ??, 2007

12-30-06 We wake up and it's snowing at the condo. It's been a while since a storm so we're pretty psyched to get up onto the mountain. On our way up we break out of the clouds and it's a real sunny day. Steamboat inverts all the time- with the warmer air up top and the colder air sinking. This day it was actually snowing below and sunny up top. Even the locals were having a hard time believing it. Around lunch time we did head down and ski the 5 inches of fresh powder on the lower trails.

12-30-06 Later in the day the inversion breaks slowly and its sunny below.

12-30-07 The skiing was still good. It's been about a week since a storm. The mountain has seen a lot of skiers with the holiday period, so there were slick spots on the more popular groomers. Not in the trees though. You had to start picking the harder, steeper trails where the beginners wouldn't venture.

12-30-06 Here's one trail that doesn't get a lot of traffic. First you have to climb up hill for 15 minutes. Then access the backcountry through a legal backcountry access gate.

12-30-06 Then you get to ski trails like St. Patty's bowl. Here's Sheila heading for a little cliff, watch out for that rock. We were able to find good skiing, you just had to look a little more.

12-31-06 The girls out for the big torch lite parade and fireworks. It was a little cold.

12-31-06 The skiers first formed a giant 06 up on the hill, changed it to an 07, and then skied down. It was pretty cool.

12-31-06 The parade lit up the entire gondola village. Pretty good.

Happy New Year 2007
